As I read this review, it took me back 15 years when I had to deal with Dr. John Gonzalez at his Orthopedic Practice in Riverside. I literally cringed as I felt for the writer of this review.

There are so many people that over the years have shared their experiences, and they all have a common theme, it astonishes me that anyone still goes to him.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHTS TO BE ASSIGNED TO ANOTHER DOCTOR…. don’t risk your health and your sanity. Just ask to be transferred.

Here is the review (author unknown) from webmd.com. For ease of reading I have reformated the post and where the text has been changed or altered (for ease of reading and so search engines can index properly), I have added [ ] marks around changes or editions for clarification.

John Gonzales is a great doctor, are words that will never leave my lips.

Long story short….work place injury .need a sooner emergency appointment due to major pain. Female on phone, “you can’t wait 2 more days for your appointment?”

Get to appointment, wait forever, as usual, in exam room with requested paperwork for “him”. He comes in [and Dr. Gonzalez], barely looks at me.

I ask question and get a hand in my face to shut up.

He leaves while saying someone will be in to schedule therapy. He never comes back. Female walks in with paperwork while I’m holding back angry tears. Doctor never looked at paperwork and I still had questions and my pain was not addressed (remember emergency appointment due to pain?).

I end up at his office, door was open, he wanted nothing to do with me. [Dr. Gonzalez] angrily came to the door and pushed me with his body. I called him an a-hole, he says, thanks for the comment. I tell him I want another doctor and then I leave.

No yelling, at all. Go to car [and] forgot paperwork and now I’m mad. Go back in, ask for doc, he never shows up. I ask again and state that if I don’t see him I’m calling police. Remember the push with his body? Manager comes out claiming I’m causing a scene,

I’m still bot yelling or even being loud. She orders me upstairs. I see [a] lady that was just laughing and talking to “his” staff and she’s supposed to make thing right or whatever. I decide that’s not gonna work for me and leave. I go downstairs to a small enclosed waiting area and write up what just happened.

Call cops. Get one with a bad attitude.

Next think I know, I’m getting written up at work for causing a scene and calling the doctor a f-Ing a-hole (which all of his “witnesses” claim is the truth and it’s not. I chose my words very carefully ) and all of a sudden all his staff happened to witness what happened.

So much more to this story that I’m not able to share.

It’s great to see that some people don’t have issues with this man. Most people I talk to are not happy with him.

I even had a coworker ask me about him, because she had a similar experience. I don’t care if he’s some kind of miracle man, it’s not worth it for treatment that you’ll receive from his staff and from him.

There’s so many more doctors out there that actually care and will take the time to talk with you and that actually care about you. Don’t waste your time with this man. He’s not worth the hype.

And the paperwork that I went back to get, conveniently disappeared within the few minutes I’d walked a short distance to my car and back to the office. Somehow, though, the X-ray that I brought in with the paperwork ended up in the computer.

I called multiple times for the paperwork, but it was never located.

I’m not a fan of liars and this person and his staff are nothing but liars and cheaters.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he paid them off to stick up for him. He can’t be a pleasant person to work for with the way that he treats patients.

See at your own risk!

Regularly I stalk the ratings and review sites to locate other patients Dr. Gonzalez and his crew have mis-treated and the news sites to see the latest scandal that Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside (and its various doctors) may be involved in.

On this last scour for news about OMGNET (Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside), it appears that OMGNET has started to employ fake reviews (wow.. now they are almost up to 2 stars; LMAO) I am truly surprised it has taken this long for them to do that.

I could also be mistaken. Maybe it was the daughter of a good friend so she received preferential treatment, and then couldn’t believe all the true things people said about this orthopedic practice because her experience wasn’t the same as genpop (general population).

But I lean toward the reviews being completely fake based on a couple of things.

Look at the reivews of Delaynee W. (https://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=vjiK6EZ8Da7c6mjBik1HhQ) one of the people to leave an outstanding review of these doctors.

She claims that she was a patient of Dr. Gonzalez’s at Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside and left a 5 Star Review for him.

Here it is:

She states that Dr. Gonzalez did surgery on her feet (plural) not foot. Three months later, she leaves another review for a spray tan business. This is her before and after photo (from yelp.com).

Do you see any signs of surgery on those “feet”?

There is some discoloration on the left foot, but if you zoom in on the photo it looks more like a blister healing not scarring, especially if Gonzo the Clown, I mean Dr. Gonzalez does the surgery (Dr. Gonzalez left what I believe is an unnecessarily huge scar on my hand at least 6 times bigger than the doctor that performed the same surgery on my other hand. For this and other reasons I do not believe he is a skilled surgeon).

Delanynee then goes on to leave the identical review for the other doctors at the practice

The Review for Gurvinder (Sunny) Uppal M.D.
(Please note Dr. Sunny Uppal (who I believe now wants to be known by Gurvinder Uppal, because Sunny Uppal was the name he went by and was in the news story when he was charged for accused of using NON-FDA approved devices in his surgeries).

And then she left the exact same review for the practice itself.

When you see tons of 1 star reviews and a single (but maybe more on the way) 5 star review, and you see an entire website dedicated to exposing the horrible experiences of those who were patients here, believe the pattern not the anomaly.

David Shows up at 8 am to find the doctor not even there and 5 patients ahead of him.

At 8:40, Dr. Gonzalez rushed in, told me to find a second opinion, and left! I waited 45 minutes for that?

His arrogance was overwhelming. I will certainly find another doctor who cares whether Ii heal or not!

The above review is a synopsis of a review left by David Alter. You can find the original text at David Alter’s Review.

Author’s Commentary:

John Gonzalez MD came in and saw the patient. So Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside will get to bill the insurance company for an office visit. Because Dr. John Gonzalez is considered an “orthopedic specialist” he receives more than a regular doctor for an office visit, probably around $140 a visit (my estimation).

So, let’s say the whole visit (and after dictation) took a whole 5 minutes… this puts Dr. Gonzalez’s hourly billable rate at $1960 per hour.

Nearly $2,000 bucks an hour to just be a prick.

Now you understand why Dr. Gonzalez requires frivolous appointments and runs his business like a cattle call, forcing patients to wait hours to be seen for just a few minutes.

Is this the kind of individual you want to support? Do you want to support an organization (OMGNET) that knowingly allows the to continue?

Vote with your pocketbooks and find another orthopedic surgeon!

Here is an email I received from Judy C. regarding her billing problems with Orthopedic Medical Group (Apple Valley & Riverside Locations). She started trying to correct the problem in May 2005 and by February 2006 (when she reached out to me) it had still not been resolved.

Italics have been added for clarification.

Hello,

I came upon your website while searching for some information re: OMG Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside. I am impressed with the information you have provided and the time you took to do so.

Although my problem is not with a particular doctor of the group, I am hoping you might provide me with some assistance. My daughter was treated by a doctor of the group (Apple Valley location), beginning in April 2004. The doctor was excellent.

However, he left the group sometime after Aug. 2004 and went to another group. (I have my own suspicions as to why he left!).

I have been phoning, writing letters, faxing info to OMG (Orthopedic Medical Group)of Riverside since May 2005 regarding my account. They continually send me a bill when in fact, they owe me money. I have provided them with documentation and in our last few conversations we agree on the fact they owe me money and the amount.

Telephone messages left with the office manager go unanswered. I have filed a complaint with my health plan, although they have paid all bills and I am not sure they can be of any assistance.

Although the dollar amount I am owed is not a large amount that is not the point. No one should have to wait for the money owed them when all documentation has been provided. To some individuals the amount I am owed would help with groceries or Christmas presents for their children.

No one should have to deal with the frustrations this medical group causes.

I am wondering if you have any suggestions/contacts I can make to expedite the return of my money. My last call to the group was Nov. 30 2005 when I left a message for the manager, “Judy”, directly on her voice mail. To date, she has not returned my call. Any information you may provide will be appreciated.

I am hoping you are feeling well and that your dealings with this group have been resolved.

Sincerely,

Judy C.

Sharon M had posted the following on an earlier version of this website. (italics added for clarification)

I am scheduled for my first visit with Dr. John Gonzalez. I work for Target and have been diagnosed with carpel tunnel in my right hand. Glad I found your website while searching for information about the doctor. My injury is work related, but I think I still have the right to choose a doctor, I hope. Did you find a good ortho doctor? Thanks for your time and information.

Sharon M.

I responded to Sharon about the great experience I had with Dr. Hiromu Shoji, and suggest she reach out to him (as I would suggest to anyone if he is still in practice). Sharon M. responded with the following:

I had to keep my appointment with Dr. John Gonzalez because I was running out of my pain medication and needed to get it refilled.

Luckily, I told my adjuster about your website prior to going to the appointment. He read the whole thing and decided to suggest their company stop referring people to Dr. Gonzalez and told me he would set up an appointment with another doctor. I called him from the doctor’s office after I had been waiting 2 hours (just to prove your point) then called him after to explain how rude and arrogant Dr. John Gonzalez [orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside] was, as he would not answer any of my questions about post-surgery, my thumb that I have to crack every 10 minutes etc… He gave me a dumb pamphlet that looks like a cheap comic book. Hope Sedgewick does stop referring people to him. I’ll warn anyone I come in contact with (about 500 people a day) to steer clear of him and OMG [Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside]. Thanks again for the heads up.

I was just curious if John Gonzalez MD ever covered his name badge and asked you to tell him his name? I wasn’t sure if he does this to everyone or if it was just me. I guess he figured I was asking too many questions about surgery. He seemed rather irritated when I told him his name. Thanks again for making such a big difference in my life.

Sharon M.

The longer he remained a patient the longer you would receive payments or maybe it was just an attitude of not caring about the patients well being.”

Below is an archived conversation between myself (Paul Lowry) and Angel Rene Moncada Jr.’s mother that I was able to find as I was cleaning some old computer files. I must have been able to make a copy of this prior to removing PHPBB.

While you are welcome to ready the entire correspondence, including the letter she sent to Dr. Sunny Uppal of Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside, the highlights are:

At every visit he was made to wait 2 to 3 hours to be seen despite the fact that he found it very difficult to sit that long with his back injury and made that known to your office staff. They didn’t seem to care.

Other forms of treatments were never discussed by Dr. Sunny Uppal.

Excessive delays (about 5 months) in treatments allowed the patient to suffer much more pain than needed.

Sunny Uppal MD didn’t listen to the patients concerns.

While my problems were with Dr. John Gonzalez at Orthopedic Medical Group of Riverside, I believe that each of these doctors are unethical and as such find solace in the company of others like themselves.

Below is the correspondence between Angel Rene Moncada Jr.’s mother and me.

Thank you so much. I have a letter than I have written to Dr. Uppal and I am sending copies to Zenith Insurance, my son’s attorney and the Medical Board of California. Someone needs to do some investigations into what is going on. I spoke with Robby Bell who is an x employee of Budway and he said that many of the drivers that were sent to the medical group had complaints but I guess they did not voice them. I will get this out to you as soon as I can. Thank you for your support with your website.

The letter his mother sent to Dr. Sunny Uppal at OMGNET.com

November 23, 2010

Gurvinder S. Uppal, MD
6800 Brockton Avenue
Riverside, CA 92506

RE: Angel Rene Moncada Jr.

Dr. Uppal:

I find that I must write this to you regarding my son, Angel Moncada.

He died on October 8, 2010.

Angel was injured on the job and filed a notice with his employer, Budway Enterprises. The owner is the type of person that feels that everyone is after his mighty buck and unfortunately refused to accept the workman’s comp claim until after Angel hired an attorney and 3 months later an MRI showed a shoulder injury and injury to 2 of his disks.

This means that medical services were held up. He was then sent to your office to be seen for these injuries. This was in June of 2009. At every visit he was made to wait 2 to 3 hours to be seen despite the fact that he found it very difficult to sit that long with his back injury and made that known to your office staff. They didn’t seem to care.

He received some physical therapy on his back but it did not help. The physical therapy sessions were scattered so far apart that there was no way that it was going to help. You told him that his back problem was not operable. There are also other methods of treatment that do not involve surgery. None of these were offered to him. He went without back therapy for almost a year. You did however mention epidurals to ease his pain. There was a long gap between the time you suggested this and the time Zenith issued authorization.

Zenith authorized epidurals to be given in April of 2010. Every time Angel went into see you, you would ask how the epidurals were working. And every time you asked, Angel would tell you he had not received any yet. Then in October of 2010 he received a copy an authorization that had been issued in April and was contacted for his first Epidural. Unfortunately he was in the hospital extremely ill when he got notice that his Epidural injection appointments were made and for him to come to the surgery center on the 6th of October. I called to notify the surgery center that he was in ICU in the hospital.

In regards to his arm, after receiving 12 therapy sessions it was decided that he would need surgery on his shoulder. This was 9 months after the injury. The surgery was done as an outpatient. Two weeks after the surgery the staples were removed and physical therapy was begun. Right after the second therapy session the incision opened and started bleeding. You told him to discontinue the physical therapy until the wound healed. This took a few weeks. Unfortunately the physical therapy did not start up right away and if I am not mistaken took about 2 months. I had some concerns about the arm not getting exercised and the fact that it may freeze up on him. That is exactly what happened. He never did get full use of his arm and he continued to have pain that was strong enough to wake him up at night when he moved his arm. He stated that he was in more pain now that before the surgery. Since physical therapy was held up for so long, not only did it freeze up and he was told by the physical therapist during an evaluation that the muscle appeared to be atrophied. The scar ended up being 1 inch wide and about 3 inches long. There was no muscle tissue under the scar and when he held his arm straight out you could actually see a hole where the scar was and it seemed as if you could feel the bone through the skin tissue. He never got full use of his arm back and like I said before, the pain continued. However, every time he went in to see you, you would say that the arm looked good. Even though he would tell you that he could not use it and continued to have pain.

Angel passed away on October 8, 2010. A year and a half after he started his workman’s comp claim.

Here is what really bothers me. If he had been given the Epidural shots in April or May of 2010 would he have had less pain? If he had less pain would he have known that the pain he was feeling in September might have been something other than his back? He was telling me that the pain in his back was radiating around to his front.

Had we known, he could have gone to see a physician sooner and they might have found that he had an e-coli infection. While in the hospital it was determined that he had e-coli sepsis. In the hospital ICU he was so unstable that they were not able to do an MRI with contrast to find the exact location of the source of the infection. Had they been able to find it there may have been a different out come?

The death certificate said Respiratory failure as primary and secondary was e-coli septic shock, Etiology unknown, lung failure; kidney failure and liver failure. However while speaking with one of the physician’s he said that e-coli infections usually come from the intestinal tract. And that there was a possibility that the intestine may have burst and this is what caused the Septic Shock. He developed ARDS and in turn suffered failure of his lungs, his kidneys and his liver.

I feel that the care given to my son while under your care was pathetically minimal. There did not seem to be any concern about having him treated in a timely or proper manner. Perhaps this was motivated by financial compensation. The longer he remained a patient the longer you would receive payments or maybe it was just an attitude of not caring about the patients well being.

I work in the medical field and in fact do physician credentialing. I verify all aspects of the information submitted by the physician.

It worries me that you would be so blasé about the patient’s timely treatments. I also found a website where other people have complained about the time they have to wait in your office and the non-caring attitude of some of the physicians and staff.

Does Zenith know about this? I would hope that if they did that they would have made arrangements with your office to correct this injustice to their members. A patient’s time is just as important to them as yours is to you. If a patient comes in 3 hours late would you still see them? I doubt it very much.

What concerns me now is the treatment of future patients.

Angel was considering a medical malpractice law suite against you but since he is now deceased that will never come to be. The Medical Board needs to be aware of what is going on in this medical facility. Unfortunately as I view the MBOC hotsheet monthly, I realize that there are many physicians who do more harm to their patients than to help.

You need to do some very deep soul searching about what you do.

The following is a reminder of a portion of the physician’s oath.

Read it, not one, not twice, but every morning before you start your day to remind you why you are there and why you studied for all those years.

“I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person’s family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.”
