Many times people think they have no choice but to see the specialist they have been referred to by their primary care physician (PCP).
There are always ways to get a referral to a different doctor.
The easiest way is to simply ask your PCP if you can be referred elsewhere. Many times your PCP has a few different specialists from which to choose.
Second, review your insurance information. Many times it will specify under what terms the insurance company can override a referral, or an appeal process that can be utilized.
When your PCP or your insurance company fail you, there is one additional method that I have successfully used.
It is important you give this method some forethought. If you try to fly by the seat of your pants you may find yourself in deep water. DO NOT BREAK THE LAW
The little known fact is that a doctor can refuse to see you.
All you have to do is to get the doctor to refuse to treat you, and you are pretty much guaranteed a new referral elsewhere.
Enough said. |
